Building a Strong Social Media Presence: Tips for Small Business Owners
When it comes to owning a small business, having a strong online presence is essential to your success. That’s why this month’s blog is all about providing tips on building a solid social media presence for your small business! Read on to discover tips on showing up (and out) on social media.
Know Who’s Shopping Your Small Business
More often than not, I see small business owners trying to be present on every single social media platform. But I’m here to tell you - that’s not the vibe. Choosing the best social media platforms for your small business is vital to social success. That’s why knowing who’s (or could be) shopping your business is essential.
The first step to social media marketing is to detail your ideal customer or client. In the marketing world, we like to call these “buyer personas.” A buyer persona is a detailed description of your ideal customer, including age, income, family makeup, pain points, etc.
Dig into sales data to determine your ideal customer's location, income, family status, etc. Detail their motivations for buying your product or service and what they really value when making a purchase.

Skip the Sales Pitch and Craft Engaging Content
Don’t just sell it—say it! Engaging with your audience is a great way to infuse excitement into your social media presence. Social media is all about conversing with your audience, which means talking to them instead of at them.
Try prioritizing high-quality visuals and multimedia and crafting compelling captions that spark interest and encourage engagement. A “call to action” (CTA) works great here and can take the form of a simple question or encouraging your audience to “tap that link in bio.”
Pro Tip: Engaging content doesn’t mean it has to be perfect. Abandon the perfection and show your audience the real (and compelling) side of your small business.
Keep to Consistent Branding
Storytelling and branding work hand in hand when it comes to social media! Keeping your branding consistent throughout all of your marketing fosters not only brand recognition but trust with your audience. Make sure you’re using a consistent voice, visuals, and messaging on every single social media platform and all your other marketing, too.

Engagement and Community Building
A piece often missing from a small business’s online presence is its engagement strategy. Remember when I mentioned building brand recognition and trust with your audience? Well, actively engaging with your audience and building community is vital!
A successful engagement strategy can be as simple as quickly answering messages and replying to comments or as complex as actively identifying key accounts to engage with. The goal here is to choose a path forward that ensures success for your small business and is something you can stick to.
Pro Tip: When replying to messages and comments, make sure you’re having a conversation and applying appropriately.
An engagement strategy, consistent branding, compelling content, and knowing your audience are all essential in building a solid social media presence for your small business. With these tips, your small business can begin showing up (and out!) on social media!
